WE WILL DEFEND OUR LIFESTYLE FROM THE NEGATIVE EFFECTS OF INAPPROPRIATE DEVELOPMENT
WE WILL DEFEND OUR PLANNING SCHEME FROM UNWANTED AMENDMENT
WE WILL DEFEND OUR YAROOMBA!
BEAUTIFUL COMMUNITIES ARE HARD TO FIND
Yaroomba is a quiet laid-back coastal village nestled up against the foreshores of the Pacific Ocean. Fronting the village is the magnificent Yaroomba Surf Beach. Residents of the area enjoy a social amenity second to none. They are surrounded by dunal heathland, live in a gentle appropriately developed urban environment, and enjoy a quality of living that is the envy of many other Sunshine Coast residents. Yaroomba, according to the 2016 Census, contains 1,623 residents. Over a number of generations, the people of Yaroomba have built up a social landscape of local and well patronised small businesses, and, over time, they have also infused into the area their community level ethos of appreciating and protecting their lifestyle and pristine natural environment. That ethos ensured that the residents of Yaroomba played their part in the compilation of the Sunshine Coast Planning Scheme 2014. In part, that Peoples’ Document, which is under the co-stewardship of the residents and Council, sought to protect the shores north of the Maroochy River from the scourge of inappropriate high-rise development. Nobody wants high-rise buildings planted right along the dunal heathlands. And then along came the development & construction multi-nat Sekisui. And then materialised the clear and present danger. The Sekisui Development Application currently before Council proposes a 5 Stage mega-development for Yaroomba. It contains a high-rise hotel and accommodation towers, it contains shops, hospitality outlets, and bars. It may well radically re-write the social landscape of Yaroomba. “It may well radically re-write the social landscape of Yaroomba” The Sekisui Development Proposal walks right over the efforts of generations of Yaroomba residents to preserve the social amenity of their coastal village, and it also walks right over the reasonable restraints against inappropriate rampant-development contained in the Sunshine Coast Planning Scheme 2014. The residents of Yaroomba Village are currently petitioning Council to hold firm against any attempt by Sekisui to amend the height and density restrictions in the Planning Scheme. The residents are petitioning the Mayor and all Councillors to clearly stand firm and declare their voting intentions. Much is at stake for the local community. Should the Development be allowed to proceed then the population of Yaroomba will rise from 1,623 to well over 4,000; local small businesses (Yaroomba, Coolum, Mt. Coolum) will be damaged by the pulling-power of overly-advertised resort bars, resort coffee shops, and resort eateries; the precedent for high-rise towers in Yaroomba will have been established; and the quiet friendly nature of the social amenity of Yaroomba Village will cease to be. The residents of Yaroomba Village are normal people who have a long standing vested interest in the preservation of their own social landscape. In seeking to protect their local lived-in environment, something they have every right to do, they have endured public demonisation as unrepresentative community activists. It is very difficult for local residents to fight against the might of developmental money, power, and influence. Sekisui is a multi-national Japanese construction giant with interests in Russia, China, and the United States. They have immense power and influence. They now have their eyes on Yaroomba. The local residents, more than understandably, have their forensic eyes firmly gazing at the Sunshine Coast Council. |
The Save Yaroomba Group (as a sub committee of Friends of Yaroomba Inc) is dedicated to the preservation of social amenity in the Yaroomba Village area. We are not opposed to appropriate development or economic growth across the Sunshine Coast region or the Yaroomba Beach precinct. We are opposed to the Sekisui Yaroomba Beach development because it does not conform to the reasonable restraints contained in the Sunshine Coast Planning Scheme 2014. The Sekisui DA will greatly affect the social environment for all residents in the Yaroomba Beach Community, and our aim is to ensure that the Sekisui Yaroomba proposal fully adheres to the height and density requirements stipulated for the Yaroomba Beach district in the Sunshine Coast Planning Scheme 2014. We welcome appropriate development to Yaroomba Beach, but we will strenuously oppose the current form of the Sekisui Yaroomba Beach proposal. If you would like to support our cause to save the Yaroomba Beach Community from this inappropriate Sekisui Yaroomba development, you are welcome to either donate via the facility on this website, or join our email list to receive updates.
